NOT WHO YOU THINK: Black Cat and the Director of Doom!

Long before Felicia Hardy padded around the pages of Marvel Comics...

 ...another Black Cat slinked around comics during the Golden Age!

We presented this original Black Cat's final tale HERE, so let's continue with her second tale (never-reprinted) from Harvey Comics' 100-page Pocket Comics #2 (1941)!

As you might have guessed, Nazi spy/film director Garboil eventually met his fate...
Written by publisher Alfred Harvey and illustrated by co-creator Al Gabrielle, the Black Cat was the most popular of Harvey's pre-humor characters, appearing regularly in Pocket Comics, then Speed Comics, a couple of one-shot appearances in other anthologies, as a regular text feature in Terry and the Pirates, and finally her own title that survived from the Golden Age into the Silver Age.

NOT Who You Think: LADY LUCK II

She's not the slinky costumed heroine created by Will Eisner...

...(although we will be covering her in the future) but a gambler-turned-investigator who made only one appearance...

It feels like a pilot for a 1950s half-hour TV series rather than a comic book, doesn't it?

In fact, the comic could easily be used as storyboards!

Wonder if the writer was a TV scripter doing some comic book work on the side!

Though the scripter is unknown, the artist for this one-shot in Charlton's Danger #13 (1955) is Bill Discount, whose style was remarkably-close to Carmine Infantino's.

In fact, since there were so few stories (only about three dozen) attributed to "Bill Discount", I thought it might be a pen-name for  a team consisting of Carmine and an unknown inker!

VALKYRIE "Conclusion"

When Last We Left Our Anti-Heroine (and Hero)...

Heroic teen aviator AirBoy, who controls the futuristic aircraft "Birdie", encounters the AirMaidens, a team of German aviatrixes who have been shooting down Allied aircraft.

Though he manages to defeat their leader, Valkyrie, in one-on-one combat, he is forced down by superior numbers, and is captured by the Luftwaffe.

Rankled by AirBoy's victory over her, Valkyrie tortures him to learn the secret of controlling his aircraft.

But, some of her squadron, sympathetic to the captive teen's plight, manage to hide AirBoy.

The AirMaidens who betrayed the Nazis are ordered put to death, and Valkyrie, to save her teammates, goes to where AirBoy is hidden...

Valkyrie would return several times during AirBoy's run in Air Fighters Comics and his own title.
When Airboy was revived by Eclipse Comics in the 1980s, Valkyrie assembled a new team of AirMaidens including a new incarnation of Black Angel, and a female version of SkyWolf called La Lupina.
The revival was succesful enough to warrant a pair of Valkyrie mini-series and an Air Maidens one-shot.

While the writer of this Golden Age is unknown, this introductory tale from Hillman's Air Fighters Comics #14 (1943) was illustrated by Fred Kida and Bill Quackenbush.

NOTE: there was a second Nazi aviatrix named Valkyrie during the Golden Age. 
She appeared in the only issue of Spotlight Publishers' TaleSpin (1944) as the nemesis of the one-shot hero FireBird, as detailed HERE!

NOT Who You Think: VALKYRIE "Part 1"

She's not Marvel's Norse warrior-woman...

...but the first comic character to bear the name "Valkyrie"! During the Golden Age, besides Black Angel, Hillman's Air Fighters Comics featured another aviatrix, but this one was not a heroine, at least initially...

Will Valkyrie rescue her friends?

Will she betray AirBoy to do it?

And, what of Birdie?
