Halloween Heroine PHANTOM LADY "Monster in the Pool!"

Sexy women and werewolves...

...long before Twilight or True Blood, the Phantom Lady put her scantly-clad body between lycanthropes and an innocent human race!

The art for this tale from Fox's Phantom Lady #16 is by the inimitable Matt Baker, and the story is probably by Ruth Roche.

Supernatural elements would crop up in several more Phantom Lady stories.

The splash page of the story is the inside cover of the comic, with only two colors, black and cyan.

"America comes first, even before Dad!"--Phantom Lady's Words to Live By!

Doctor Crime (not to be confused with The Crime Doctor), despite being the first supervillain the Fox incarnation of Phantom Lady fought, never returned.

When this Ruth Roche-scripted and Matt Baker-illustrated tale from Fox's Phantom Lady #15 (1947) was reprinted as the cover feature in IW/Super Comic's Great Action Comics #8 (1958), the splash page was left out, because the reprint publisher didn't have the cover and inside cover printing plates, only the interiors for this issue!

As a result, the editor retitled the story "The Zombie".

The new cover was a combination of two redrawn story panels and a badly-rendered (and mis-colored) Phantom Lady.

The cover art is by Carl (Golden Age Human Torch) Burgos.

Sometimes it's the woman behind the man...

...who's the real heroine of the story!
Rust Masson secretly runs Copper City's government and it's underworld!
Her ex-lover, newspaperman Hal Webber, runs the Express, also secretly-owned by Rust and used as a propaganda tool.
But Hal has fallen for Rust's step-daughter Audrey, who's convinced Hal to expose her step-mother (though Audrey doesn't know it yet)!

Now the excrement has hit the rotating blades!

Will Hal, with Audrey at his side, stop Rust's plans?

For the final Twice-Told Tale...

...from the issue Dr Wertham vilified in Seduction of the Innocent, The Phantom Lady deals out just desserts in this never-reprinted tale of luncheonette larceny!

Yeah, she killed them, but they deserved it!
The splendidly-sordid, but deliciously-cheesecakey art for this story from Fox's Phantom Lady #17 (1948) is, of course, by legendary good-girl illustrator Matt Baker!
The quirky story is probably by Ruth Roche.

Here's the cover to this issue...

...but, oddly enough, it has nothing to do with either Phantom Lady story in the book.
It's probably the single most famous example of comic book "good girl" art in history!

And, yes, it's by Matt Baker!
Dr Fredric Wertham described the cover in Seduction of the Innocent as "sexual stimulation by combining 'headlights' with the sadist's dream of tying up a woman."
And...?
BTW, while the story has never been reprinted (until now, see below), it was re-used... 

...and when the story was redrawn for use in 1954, both violence and sexuality were toned down, almost into nonexistencem thanks to the Comics Code!

Script in both versions probably by Ruth Roche.

However, the art in Ajax/Farrell's Phantom Lady #4 (1955) is not by Matt Baker, and though adequate, is no match for the original!
